John came to Shreveport in January of 1977 when he was transferred to Barksdale AFB.

He’s been active in Shreveport politics since deciding to make Shreveport his home.

John practiced law for 40 years and he now monitors local politics. He regularly attends Shreveport City Council and Caddo Parish Commission meetings.

John is published weekly in The Inquisitor, bi-monthly in The Forum News, and frequently in the Shreveport Times.

SHOULD CITY OF SHREVEPORT LEASE PROPERTY TO A BUSINESS OWNED BY COUNCIL MEMBER FOR A HOOKAH BAR?

The city of Shreveport has executed a lease with the Hookah District LLC of the restaurant space on
Clyde Fant formerly occupied by Proud Mary's.

The lease commenced on Aug. 1.

Interim city council member Alan Jackson has a ownership interest in this limited liability company.

This entity operated a hookah bar on Shreveport Barksdale Highway that was totally destroyed by a fire in May of this year.

The lease space is publicly owned property.

Some are questioning if the city should lease property that allows smoking.

The council has prohibited smoking in all other public buildings and the Shreveport casinos.

Just as important are concerns that this lease is a violation of the ethics guidelines for public officials.

The Hookah District will need to have new alcohol permits issues by the city and the state. Jackson will
need to disclose his ownership interest in this entity.
