An ordinance was introduced at the Tuesday July 9 to follow a Caddo Commission resolution dealing with pay day loans and pawn shops.
The background information listed on the fact sheet that accompanies ordinances noted
“The Caddo Parish Commission passed Resolution No. 50 of 2019 urging and requesting the Shreveport City Council enact a moratorium on issuing permits for the establishment of new pawn shops and pay day lending institutions.”
Guess what?
That resolution that was actually passed did not include pawn shops. The original resolution did include pawn shops.
The sponsor of that resolution Commissioner Steven Jackson also made incorrect comments about the Chase Bank and its sale of the 70th street branch that had been closed. Jackson said it was being sold to a pawn shop versus an interested local credit union. It was sold to another business - not a pawn shop or a pay day loan company.
Council member Levette Fuller mentioned Jackson’s remarks at the Monday July 8 work session. She stated that as a reason for her ordinance on pawn shops and payday loans.
Did Fuller get her bad “poop” on Chase Bank and the wrong resolution from Jackson? Did she get snookered? And what about Nickelson who also sponsored the ordinance?
Thankfully, reason prevailed and the ordinance was amended to delete pawn shops. It can be adopted at the next council meeting on Tues. July 23.
