Its rare that New Orleans can be cited as a good example of many government programs, but the Crescent City is just that when it comes to COVID-19 vaccinations.
In recent weeks New Orleans has launched two programs that should be considered by Shreveport and Caddo Parish. And Bossier City and Bossier Parish as well.
The first is the EMS Homebound Program.
It designed for those who have limited mobility or are not able to leave their homes for various reasons. Vaccinations are administered in citizens residences.
NOLA residents can call for the vaccinations or visit a website to sign up.
The Homebound Program is a collaborative effort with the NOLA EMS, New Orleans Health Department Medical Reserve Corps, New Orleans Fire Department and NOLA Ready staff members.
The other much needed program is a ride-share to COVID-19 sites.
The partnership is between the city of New Orleans, UBER , community groups and healthcare partners.
Twenty thousand free or reduced fare UBER rides will be provided to mass vaccination sites.
Ride appointments can be made by phone or on a website.
Like Shreveport, New Orleans has a large African American population of limited means/transportation opportunies and a disporpoinate share of COVID-19 deaths. Both these programs are exemplary and worthy of duplication.
