Democracy works best when voters have several choices at the polls.
That’s the problem when people like Alan Jackson are appointed to an elective office for a long term. These individuals have not been vetted by voters, yet they make many important votes on behalf of their "constituents."
The council seats in District E and District B do not have elected incumbents seeking re-election.
Alvin Oliver has announced he will seek election in District E. He has scheduled a kickoff event for next Thurs. at Shane’s on Mansfield Road at 11 a.m.
Oliver has lived in the district all his life. He attended Fairpark and Grambling.
Oliver is a veteran and a small business owner with five employees.
His life experiences equip him well to serve over a very diverse district that has suffered from leadership and representation since the resignation of James Flurry last year.
Gary Brooks will seek election in District B, the city's melting pot.
Like Oliver, Brooks is a long-time resident of his district.
He has owned several businesses in the city.
Brooks is very familiar with the challenges of being a business owner, especially in Shreveport.
Both Oliver and Brooks are to be commended for seeking office.
They both add new dimensions to the council races in their districts and give voters clear choices.
More concerned Shreveport citizens should seriously consider a council election bid. Qualifying ends next Friday, July 22 at 4: 30 p.m.
