HIGHLIGHTS OF SHREVEPORT PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING ON MAY 23

Chief Wayne Smith provided information on many topics at this committee meeting. Here is a summary of the most significant comments:

1. Shreveport Police Department (SPD) received 58 new police cars late last year and early this year with the process of the 2021 bond package. All but 4 are now in service and the last 4 should be on the streets by early June.

2. Chief Wayne gave a detailed report on the three police substations being constructed. This KEEL article is a great summary of these comments.

3. Chief Wayne comments on a possible temporary substation location for Area 2 which is  the old KRMD Station on Alexander Street along with a picture of the location. This location has many problems with the building and the limited parking. The committee agreed that this location should not be considered. Efforts will continue to find a temporary location for Area 2 until the new substation is constructed if not located at Kingston Road.

4.  The new firing range for SPD officers is 99% complete. It is expected that the move in date will be the first week of June.

5. SPD had arrested over 20 squatters and 17 have been convicted/plead guilty. The others are set for arraignment.

6. The SPD mobile command center was received on May 23. Chief Wayne said it is state of the art, and it will be in service by mid-June, if not sooner.

7. Chief Wayne has set up a procedure to lessen some of the dangers of cruising, including traffic congestion, spinning of tires and loud music. The comprehensive program received accolades from committee members. Chief Wayne stated that SPD had entered into an agreement with Caddo Sheriff to assist in dealing with cruising and dangerous actions connected with large gatherings.

8. Operation New Dawn has been commenced to deal with homeless persons in the downtown area. Chief Smith said meetings will be conducted with owners of businesses  under the Red River Bridge and the DDA.
