EXCITEMENT OVER OPENING OF FIRST SPD SUBSTATION DAMPENED BY RASH OF SHREVEPORT SHOOTINGS

I get it--police can NOT  be on every corner, in every parking lot, in every home/apartment, and everywhere were people do bad things, like shoot others with guns.

I understand that "bad" people do "bad" things no matter what proactive and reactive steps are taken by law enforcement. And as a guest on the Mike and McCarty KEEL radio show this morning said,--taking guns off the streets or passing gun control legislation will not stop those with a criminal mindset from obtaining guns.

I could list the rash of shootings this month, at least one fatal, that have occurred this month in Shreveport. But why go through that effort because by the time this column is read the list will most likely be outdated.

Yes, today is one for celebration for the Shreveport Police Department and the voters who approved the recent bond issue to build police substations. The first SPD substation will have a ribbon cutting today at 2:30 p.m. at its 5200 Monkhouse location.

Hopefully more police present in west Shreveport will have a deterrent effect. Not to be pessimistic but I am doubtful.
