One of the things I'm proudest of accomplishing as Mayor of Shreveport is the progress we've made through SPAR — Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation. That’s because SPAR is about so much more than buildings and parks—through SPAR, we are truly improving the quality of life for our Shreveport citizens of all ages and abilities across our city.
Supporting recreation, enrichment, and educational experiences for our youth in Shreveport is an important part of these efforts. We've brought back youth football and flag football, expanded summer camps, and distributed more than 450 bicycles to Shreveport kids. We’ve also introduced exciting STEM, after school, and robotics programs for our children. It’s important that we prioritize programs like these, which positively impact outcomes for our children and our ongoing efforts to grow our economy, retain local talent, and build a resilient, competitive workforce.
What’s more, it has also been my shared mission with SPAR to do more for our senior citizens. We've expanded recreational opportunities at our SPAR facilities as well as adaptive sports programs for people with disabilities.
All the while, we have continued making improvements to our parks, playgrounds, golf courses, and community facilities citywide for all our citizens to enjoy. With 63 parks, 16 community centers, and more than 460,000 community center visits each year, SPAR touches lives across Shreveport in meaningful ways by providing public spaces with outdoor amenities to promote our health and wellbeing, enhanced quality of life, and a place we can all share and take pride in.
We're building stronger neighborhoods, healthier families, and more opportunities for our children. That's real progress. And we're just getting started!
