John came to Shreveport in January of 1977 when he was transferred to Barksdale AFB.

He’s been active in Shreveport politics since deciding to make Shreveport his home.

John practiced law for 40 years and he now monitors local politics. He regularly attends Shreveport City Council and Caddo Parish Commission meetings.

John is published weekly in The Inquisitor, bi-monthly in The Forum News, and frequently in the Shreveport Times.

He enjoys addressing civic groups on local government issues and elections.

 

Settle Talk: Yes Virginia, there is a reason to go to the polls on Dec 5

 Goodness, it’s like all the air out of the hot-air balloon has leaked out in a big whoosh!

Most of the huff and puff and constant 24/7 media coverage of the Nov. 3 elections has come and gone. The post-mortems are still playing as the audiences diminish daily.

But the fat lady still has a few verses to belt out on Saturday, Dec. 5.

All Louisiana voters will have another constitutional amendment to consider. This one reads, “Do you support an amendment to allow the governor to approve a person who resides out-of-state to serve as an at-large member of the public postsecondary education board of supervisors?”

Depending on voter residence and party registration, there may be more elections on their ballots.

Emily Settle Merckle and Edward Mouton face are in a run-off election for Shreveport city court. Merckle garnered 45 percent of the vote; Mouton had 28 percent. Merckle is 33, and Mouton is 63. Both are Republicans.

Billy Gaston Jr. and Kevin McClure are in the Justice of the Peace Ward 6 run-off.

Susie Giles and Kim Jaynes are run-off opponents for the mayor of Hosston.

Ramona Eubanks-Anders and Whit Giles are the finalists for the Hosston chief of police.

There are several contested races for membership on the Republican State Central Committee.

Michael Coston and Lorine Spratt square off in the 37th District, Div. 8.

In Div. C, Jimmy Allen, Gina Martinez and Carl Rice are opponents.

Harold Coates and Mary Ann Van Osdell are opponents in Div. D.

In the 38th Senatorial district Div. A, Jake Brown and Marty Wooldridge square off.

In Div. B, Sandy McDade and Laura Neubert are opponents.

James Carstensen and Lee O. Savage oppose each other for the 39th Senatorial District Div. C seat.

Early voting is from Friday, Nov. 20, through Saturday, Nov. 28, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day and Sunday, Nov. 22. Hours are 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
