● Weston "Wes" Merriott filed a federal lawsuit against city officials, including three Council members and the City Attorney, alleging numerous First Amendment violations related to the Council’s consideration a citizen-initiated term limit petition.
● Merriott claims his free speech rights were suppressed during public meetings, including interruptions and threats of removal. Two council members are also alleged to have met in secret to limit Merriott’s future participation in Council Meetings, leading to a gag order imposed by the City Attorney.
● In the lawsuit, Merriott seeks a permanent injunction against the gag order, training for the Council on First Amendment Rights, corrections to meeting minutes, and damages. Merriott is represented by lawyers from the Tulane First Amendment Law Clinic.
