John came to Shreveport in January of 1977 when he was transferred to Barksdale AFB.

He’s been active in Shreveport politics since deciding to make Shreveport his home.

John practiced law for 40 years and he now monitors local politics. He regularly attends Shreveport City Council and Caddo Parish Commission meetings.

John is published weekly in The Inquisitor, bi-monthly in The Forum News, and frequently in the Shreveport Times.

He enjoys addressing civic groups on local government issues and elections.

 

BOSSIER CITY OFFICIALS SUED FOR FIRST AMENDMENT VIOLATIONS, SILENCING OF DISSENTING VIEWS, AND SECRET MEETING

● Weston "Wes" Merriott filed a federal lawsuit against city officials, including three Council members and the City Attorney, alleging numerous First Amendment violations related to the Council’s consideration a citizen-initiated term limit petition.

● Merriott claims his free speech rights were suppressed during public meetings, including interruptions and threats of removal. Two council members are also alleged to have met in secret to limit Merriott’s future participation in Council Meetings, leading to a gag order imposed by the City Attorney.

● In the lawsuit, Merriott seeks a permanent injunction against the gag order, training for the Council on First Amendment Rights, corrections to meeting minutes, and damages. Merriott is represented by lawyers from the Tulane First Amendment Law Clinic.
