IS ALAN JACKSON NOW THE SPOKESPERSON FOR THE COUNCIL--OR JUST JACKSON FIVE?

Shreveport councilman Alan Jackson was interviewed on KEEL radio this a.m. on the Mike and McCarty radio show.

The questions posed to him primarily dealt with the vote by five of the council members to delay any action on funding street repairs, blight remediation and addition street lighting in the total amount of $11.5 million proposed by Mayor Arceneaux.

Today Jackson said numerous times that "the council" decided and "the council voted".

Actually, the vote was 5-2 to delay action. Republicans Jim Taliaferro and Grayson Boucher opposed the postponement for two weeks.

The five Democrats on the council--Jackson, Gary Brooks, Ursula Bowman, James Green and Tabatha Taylor--voted for the postponement.

Jackson today said there was concern on the 2020 list of streets for repair that the list included a new street to be built in councilwoman's Bowman district. He did not remember the street.

Jackson is glib with his verbiage but often not precise with his facts.

To have been correct, Jackson should have stated that a "majority of the council" or "the Democrats on the council" voted to postpone the funding ordinance.

Jackson had the list of streets on Monday before the council meeting. Most of the streets on the list are black neighborhoods.

If in fact a "new street" had been discovered on the proposed list an amendment could have been offered to correct the issue.

In the alternative, the ordinances could have been approved and later amended.

In any event, the five Democrats voted to postpone the start of street repairs for two weeks.

"The council" did not take such action. It’s a matter of semantics, but then Jackson does have a doctorate degree.
