SEABAUGH’S DISTRICT ATTORNEY CAMPAIGN RHETORIC FALLS SHORT OF REALITY

State Senator Alan Seabaugh announced his candidacy for Caddo District Attorney yesterday.

Here are some of his comments as reported by the media:

1.       I am going to make every neighborhood safe.

2.      The Caddo justice system has become a revolving door to put criminals back on the street before the arresting officer can even complete paperwork.

3.      If you’re a criminal, we’re going to catch you and prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.

As a practicing attorney Seabaugh has made his living representing insurance companies. Whether or not he even knows where the Caddo criminal courtrooms are, much less tried a case in one lately, is an unknown.

His primary “qualifications” for Caddo DA is his Republican party affiliation and his white ethnicity. After those two, the list is very short.

Evidently Seabaugh does not know these realities of the criminal justice system he hopes to head up:

1.      The Caddo DA does NOT make arrests.

2.      The Caddo DA does NOT set bonds for criminals who have been arrested.

3.      The Caddo DA prosecutes criminals but does NOT sentence them.

One can expect Seabaugh to run a divisive campaign that that will fall ignominiously short at the polls. What is his long-term game plan is unknown, because occupying the Caddo DA chair in 2027 is a pipe dream.
