If you missed the Caddo Commission work session yesterday, then you probably don't have the answer on Pride Month and Pickleball.
Here it is--both of these topics were on the Commission agenda, and will be again at the Commission's meeting this Thursday.
According to Wikipedia, "Pride Month, sometimes specified as LGBTQ Pride Month, is a month-long observance dedicated to the celebration of LGBTQ pride, commemorating the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) culture and community. Pride Month is observed in June in the United States, coinciding with the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests."
Wikipedia provides that "Pickleball is a racket or paddle sport in which two or four players use a smooth-face paddle to hit a perforated, hollow plastic ball over a 34-inch-high net until one side is unable to return the ball or commits a rule infraction. Pickleball is played indoors and outdoors."
Thursday, the Commission will vote on a Special Resolution Recognizing Pride Month introduced by Commissioner Victor Thomas. There was extended discussion of this resolution yesterday and much more is expected Thursday.
Most observers believe the resolution will pass on a split vote and that no further debate is needed. It has been suggested that the Commissioners skip any comments and just vote on the resolution.
Pickleball is the fast-growing sport nationwide. Caddo Parish does not have any public pickleball courts. The Administration floated a plan to issue $10 million bonds to bill a pickleball complex in southeast Shreveport.
The YMCA has agreed to manage the complex. The Shreveport-Bossier Tourists and Convention Bureau predicts that the proposed complex would bring in big bucks and out of town visitors for tournaments.
The vote on this proposal may be delayed for further review by the Commission. Certainly, the public should have the opportunity to provide more input on both of these issues. If you go to the Thursday Commission meeting you may want to bring your supper for what is expected to be a long meeting.
