How long Shreveport City Judge Sheva Sims will be suspended from the bench by the Louisiana Supreme Court is a question that should be answered in February, if not sooner.
The Louisiana Judiciary Commission recommended a one-year suspension without pay. In arguments before the Louisiana Supreme Court this week, Sim’s attorney suggested a 60-day suspension without pay. The Supreme Court can impose any sanctions, including removal from the bench.
If Sims is handed a suspension for the remainder of this year, then she would NOT be eligible to seek re-election this fall. If she is suspended on the final day of qualifying (July 31,2026) then she cannot seek re-election.
Notwithstanding her ability to seek another term on the Shreveport City Court, it is time that another person fills this position. Sims has tarnished the integrity of the Shreveport City Court, and it cannot be restored as long as she is wearing a black robe.
This is a minority voter court district. There are many African American attorneys well qualified to serve as a city judge. Efforts should commence to identify and then support candidates who will seek this position without regard to any re-election bid by Sims.
